This is my second pair of selfstriping socks. For the first one I used the Vanilla Latte Pattern. I like the colours of these yarns but the yarn itself leaves me a bit underwhelmed, it's just not terribly nice to knit with it. I am also doubtful of using it in a busy pattern. Maybe the hearts would have been more visible if there wasn't so much going on at the same time.
Could well be that they are actually quite lovely and I can't appreciate them the way they deserve. I have to admit that I am not really feeling a lot of knitting mojo at the moment. I am not too excited about life, not because there are a lot of big problems to be solved, I am just feeling tired and uninspired all the time. Not in a really bad burnt out sense, but somewhere a tiny bit lost.
They look nice!!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean though, I just bound off a pair of socks myself that I thought I'd be super excited about the finished product because I tried some new-to-me techniques and new yarn, and they're just ok.... it happens, onto the next I guess...
I'm starting to think that plain socks are the best. So maybe the yarn itself should be variegated enough or in a very beautiful colour and that's all the excitement socks need ;-)
DeleteWhen I (re)started knitting 9 years ago I knit a lot of lace. That was when I realized that when you have a colorful yarn it is better not to use a stitch-pattern, or use a basic, not too complicated one (leaf-patterns for example). I use to say that the yarn and the pattern are "killing" each other, neither one can show its beauty. I have problems knitting socks in yarns which have many contrasting and strong colors. I came to the conclusion, that if the yarns have shades of the same color I like the knitted piece more. I think that colorfully variegated yarns work better combined in texture with a solid contrasting yarn (try Broken seed stitch socks) and self-striping yarns look great in Fair-Isle patterns.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I'll have to plan more for my next socks, I guess...
